Ex-situ conservation is used when a species is highly threatened, its habitat is unsafe, or its germplasm must be preserved for future recovery. Plants may be conserved in botanical gardens or as seeds in seed banks. Animals may be maintained in zoological parks with breeding programmes. Gametes, embryos, tissues or seeds can be stored at very low temperatures through cryopreservation. Ex-situ methods protect selected species or genetic material, but they do not preserve the entire natural ecosystem in the same way as in-situ conservation. CITES and biodiversity treaties support regulation and cooperation for protecting threatened biodiversity across regions.
