Biogas plants use microbial activity in oxygen-free digesters. Cattle dung slurry is a good substrate because it contains cellulose-rich organic matter and methanogens such as Methanobacterium, which also occur in the rumen of cattle. In the digester, different anaerobic microbes break complex organic matter into simpler compounds, and methanogens convert these products into methane-rich gas.
