Bar Magnet and Magnetic Field Lines

A bar magnet is a magnetic dipole with a north pole and a south pole. Its magnetic field lines are imaginary curves whose tangent at any point gives the direction of the magnetic field at that point.

When drawing the field pattern, show arrows from N to S outside the magnet and from S to N inside the magnet. Also mention that closer field lines mean a stronger magnetic field.

Magnetic Dipole Moment of a Current Loop and Bar Magnet

Magnetic dipole moment is a vector quantity that measures the strength and orientation of a magnetic dipole. For a plane current loop, its magnitude is m = NIA.

Always write the unit A m^2 for magnetic dipole moment. For torque questions, use the vector relation tau = m x B and the magnitude tau = mB sin theta.

Magnetisation, Magnetic Intensity and Susceptibility

Magnetisation M is the magnetic dipole moment per unit volume of a material. Magnetic intensity H represents the magnetising field, and magnetic susceptibility chi measures how strongly a material becomes magnetised in response to H.

For direct formula questions, write B = mu0(H + M) and chi = M/H clearly. Mention that chi is dimensionless because M and H have the same SI unit.

Diamagnetic, Paramagnetic and Ferromagnetic Materials

Diamagnetic, paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic materials are three classes of magnetic materials distinguished by the direction and strength of magnetisation produced when they are placed in an external magnetic field.
