Redox Reaction
A redox reaction is a reaction in which oxidation and reduction happen at the same time.
Practice This ConceptMain explanation
Teacher explanation
Redox reactions are important because one substance loses electrons while another gains them. In many Class 10 examples, one reactant gains oxygen and another loses oxygen, or electrons move from one substance to another.
Example
Copper oxide with hydrogen is a redox reaction because copper oxide is reduced and hydrogen is oxidized.
Simple analogy
Redox means reduction plus oxidation.
Common confusion
Students may describe only oxidation or only reduction and forget that both occur together.
Exam tip
If one substance is oxidized, check which other substance is reduced in the same reaction.
