HIV is a retrovirus that infects cells of the immune system, especially helper T-lymphocytes. Its genetic material is RNA, and reverse transcriptase helps form viral DNA inside host cells. As infected helper T-cells are destroyed or impaired, the immune system becomes less able to fight opportunistic infections. HIV spreads through infected blood, sexual contact, shared contaminated needles, and from infected mother to child; it does not spread through casual contact. ELISA is used as a screening diagnostic test. Prevention includes safe blood practices, sterile needles, awareness, and organised public health programmes such as NACO.
