Innate immunity acts quickly and does not require previous exposure to a pathogen. Physical barriers include skin and mucous membranes. Physiological barriers include acid in the stomach, saliva, tears, and body temperature responses that make survival difficult for microbes. Cellular barriers include phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages that engulf pathogens. Cytokine barriers include interferons produced by virus-infected cells, which help protect nearby cells. Inflammation is an important innate response because blood flow, immune cells, and chemical signals increase at the affected site.
