Fertilisation and Implantation

Fertilisation is the fusion of a haploid sperm with a haploid ovum to form a diploid zygote, while implantation is the attachment of the blastocyst to the uterine endometrium.

Student-friendly explanation

In humans, fertilisation usually occurs in the ampullary-isthmic junction of the oviduct. Sperm must reach the secondary oocyte, and one sperm fuses with it, triggering completion of meiosis II and formation of the ovum. Fusion of male and female pronuclei forms the diploid zygote. The zygote undergoes cleavage divisions while moving towards the uterus, forming a morula and then a blastocyst. The blastocyst embeds in the endometrium, beginning implantation. Exams commonly test the site of fertilisation, difference between zygote and blastocyst, and the order from fertilisation to implantation.

How to write this in exams

  1. 1

    Start with the exact idea

Fertilisation is the fusion of a haploid sperm with a haploid ovum to form a diploid zygote, while implantation is the attachment of the blastocyst to the uterine endometrium.

  2. 2

Then show how to use it

Ovulation releases secondary oocyte; sperm reaches oocyte in oviduct; one sperm fuses with oocyte; meiosis II completes; male and female nuclei fuse to form zygote; cleavage forms morula; blastocyst forms; blastocyst implants in endometrium.

  3. 3

    Add one concrete example

If a question asks what happens after zygote formation, the expected sequence is cleavage, morula, blastocyst and implantation in the uterine lining.

  4. 4

    Avoid this incomplete answer

A common wrong answer is saying the zygote implants immediately. The zygote first undergoes cleavage and reaches the blastocyst stage before implantation.

Definition

Fertilisation is the fusion of a haploid sperm with a haploid ovum to form a diploid zygote, while implantation is the attachment of the blastocyst to the uterine endometrium.

Example

If a question asks what happens after zygote formation, the expected sequence is cleavage, morula, blastocyst and implantation in the uterine lining.

Rule to remember

Sequence rule: sperm entry completion of meiosis II zygote formation cleavage morula blastocyst implantation.

Sequence to remember

Sequence rule: sperm entry>
completion of meiosis II>
zygote formation>
cleavage>
morula>
blastocyst>
implantation. Important labels are sperm, ovum, ampullary-isthmic junction, zygote, cleavage stages, morula, blastocyst, trophoblast, inner cell mass and endometrium. Notice location changes from oviduct to uterus. Ovulation releases secondary oocyte; sperm reaches oocyte in oviduct; one sperm fuses with oocyte; meiosis II completes; male and female nuclei fuse to form zygote; cleavage forms morula; blastocyst forms; blastocyst implants in endometrium

Memory hook

Fertilisation makes zygote; cleavage makes blastocyst; uterus receives blastocyst.

Examples and method

Worked example

For a sequence question, arrange these correctly: blastocyst, zygote, implantation, cleavage. Correct order: zygote cleavage blastocyst implantation.

Method to apply

Ovulation releases secondary oocyte; sperm reaches oocyte in oviduct; one sperm fuses with oocyte; meiosis II completes; male and female nuclei fuse to form zygote; cleavage forms morula; blastocyst forms; blastocyst implants in endometrium.

Diagram support

Important labels are sperm, ovum, ampullary-isthmic junction, zygote, cleavage stages, morula, blastocyst, trophoblast, inner cell mass and endometrium. Notice location changes from oviduct to uterus.

How CBSE asks it

Asked as site-based MCQ, sequence arrangement, diagram labelling of blastocyst, and short answer on implantation.

Avoid common mistakes

Common confusion

Students often confuse fertilisation with implantation. Fertilisation forms the zygote in the oviduct; implantation is attachment of the blastocyst in the uterus.

Common wrong answer

A common wrong answer is saying the zygote implants immediately. The zygote first undergoes cleavage and reaches the blastocyst stage before implantation.

Exam tip

Use the words ampullary-isthmic junction, zygote, cleavage, blastocyst and endometrium in sequence for a complete answer.

Quick check

Where does fertilisation usually occur in humans, and where does implantation occur?

Fertilisation usually occurs at the ampullary-isthmic junction of the oviduct, while implantation occurs in the endometrium of the uterus after blastocyst formation.

Answer writing and exam use

1-mark answer

Define fertilisation, state its usual site, mention zygote formation, write cleavage to blastocyst sequence, define implantation and identify endometrium as the site.
