After implantation, the trophoblast and uterine tissue contribute to placenta formation. The placenta acts as a connection between mother and developing embryo, enabling exchange of oxygen, nutrients and waste products. It also functions as an endocrine organ by secreting hormones such as hCG, hPL, estrogen, progesterone and relaxin at appropriate stages. The embryo develops germ layers, and these layers give rise to organs during organogenesis. Gestation in humans lasts about nine months. Exam questions focus on placenta functions, pregnancy hormones, germ layers, organogenesis and the distinction between embryo support and hormone secretion.
